About Junior Firefighters Association of Nova Scotia

    What is a Junior Firefighter?

Junior firefighters are youth between the ages of 13 and 18 who are under aged to join a fire department as a full member. Junior firefighters can be considered active observers, who participate in many of the activities of a full firefighter, excluding entering areas of danger, such as fighting live fires.

    Mission Statement

To build awareness of the opportunities for youth to participate in their local fire services and to promote healthy community involvement.

    Our Founder

Lisette Yorke is a high school student from Hillside Boularderie, Cape Breton, NS. She has been an active member of the local Southside Boularderie Volunteer Fire Department for the last four years. She enjoys playing hockey and soccer, plays the piano, and volunteers in her spare time.

    Background

After noting the declining enrollment in her local fire department, especially in younger members, Lisette decided to initiate a program to promote youth involvement in their local fire departments. The Junior Fire Fighters Association of Nova Scotia pre-training program was initiated. This program primarily began with a comprehensive survey sent to all Fire departments within Nova Scotia, asking questions about Junior firefighter participation, promotion, and regulations in the local departments. The response was excellent and a great deal of information was collected as to how fire departments across Nova Scotia operate in relation to youth members within their departments. To view the results of this survey, see the “Survey Results” link on the main page.

Since those beginnings, the Junior Firefighters Association of Nova Scotia has grown to include a pre-training program. This program was developed with the information collected from the initial survey. To view or download the guidelines for this program visit the “Program” link on the main page.
